Unmasking Tradition: A Hands-On Cultural Journey

Step beyond the souvenir shops and into the living workshop of Mr. Lakshitha, a dedicated artisan whose family has kept the Ambalangoda mask tradition alive for generations. This two-hour session is a deep dive into an ancient craft that serves both ritualistic and theatrical purposes in Sri Lanka.

What You Will Experience (The Hands-On Process):

  1. The Story of Wood & Wax: Your host will first introduce you to the process of carving the masks from lightweight Kaduru wood and explain how the different mask types are used in the Kolam (Folk) and Sanni (Exorcism) dances.
  2. The Power of Pigment: Mr. Lakshitha will showcase the traditional method of creating vibrant colours from natural dyes (such as minerals, clay, and plant extracts), explaining their historical significance.
  3. Your Canvas: You will receive a pre-carved miniature mask (e.g., a Gurulu Raksha or a Sanni figure).
  4. The Art of Colorings: Under the artisan’s patient guidance, you will learn the precise method of applying these traditional pigments to your mask, following the authentic patterns and lines established over centuries.
